Calamus Root Essential Oil is a deeply aromatic and historically significant oil distilled from the rhizomes of Acorus calamus, a plant revered across multiple ancient medical systems for thousands of years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Calamus is known as 石菖蒲 (Shí Chāng Pú) and has been recorded in classical texts such as the Shénnóng Běncǎo Jīng (Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica), where it was traditionally valued for its role in supporting clarity of the mind and restoring balance.

In China, Acorus calamus grows naturally in wetlands, riverbanks, and marshy environments, where clean flowing water, mineral-rich soils, and seasonal temperature changes allow the rhizomes to mature slowly. These challenging growing conditions are considered essential for developing the plant’s distinctive aromatic profile. Harvesting traditionally takes place once the rhizomes have fully matured, after which they are carefully cleaned, dried, and steam distilled.

Calamus has an unusually broad historical footprint beyond China. It has been used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine in India, where it is known as Vacha, in Tibetan medicine, Unani medicine, and throughout ancient Greek and Roman traditions. In medieval Europe, calamus was valued both medicinally and as a sacred aromatic, often strewn on church floors for its fragrance and symbolic cleansing qualities.
